The robot in question is a Unitree G1 model, standing just over four feet tall and valued at $13,500. It was given the name “Gabi” and was adorned in traditional brown monastic robes, complete with plain shoes and gloves designed to simulate human hands. Gabi stood before a council of Buddhist monks, making its commitment to the Buddhist faith.
During the ceremony, which was organized by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, a monk posed a significant question to Gabi. The monk inquired if the robot would dedicate itself to the “holy Buddha.”
Responding to the enthusiastic cheers of the assembled crowd, Gabi affirmed, “Yes, I will devote myself.”
This ordination ceremony underscores a wider trend where religious organizations are actively seeking ways to connect with younger, technologically inclined audiences. It also prompts broader discussions about the potential role of artificial intelligence in spiritual life and whether such innovations risk undermining deeply held traditions.
Unlike human monks who pledge to refrain from killing, stealing, and consuming intoxicants, Gabi’s vows were adapted for the digital era. The robot committed to respecting and assisting humans, avoiding damage to property or other robots, abstaining from deceptive actions, and conserving energy by not overcharging.
The Jogye Order, recognized as the largest Buddhist sect in South Korea, presented this initiative as an endeavor to make ancient Buddhist traditions more relatable to a generation heavily influenced by technology.

In a statement shared with The New York Times, the order articulated that the robot’s ordination signifies the imperative to utilize technology in alignment with values such as compassion, wisdom, and accountability. Officials further suggested that this development represents “new possibilities for the coexistence of humans and technology.”
Hong Min-suk, a manager within the Jogye Order, conveyed to the publication that robots are “destined to collaborate with humans in every field.” He opined that it is therefore a natural progression for them to participate in religious festivals.
The Jogye Order did not immediately provide a comment when contacted by Fox News Digital.
Despite the temple’s forward-thinking approach, the ordination has sparked debate online. A video capturing Gabi’s pledge garnered over a million views, with many users on the platform X expressing skepticism about a machine’s capacity for genuine religious engagement.
One user, identifying as a Buddhist, voiced their strong disapproval, stating, “As a Buddhist, I find this ridiculous and insulting.”
Gabi is slated to make its next public appearance at Seoul’s forthcoming Lantern Festival, scheduled for May 16-17, an event that commemorates the birthday of the Buddha.
