Humanoid Robot Sets New World Record in Beijing Half-Marathon

SouthernWorldwide.com – A groundbreaking event took place in Beijing over the weekend, where a humanoid robot named Lightning achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing the human world record for the half-marathon distance.

The Beijing E-Town Robot Half Marathon saw dozens of robots competing on a dedicated course, separate from human runners. This event highlighted the rapid advancements in robotics technology.

Developed by the Chinese smartphone company Honor, the Lightning robot completed the 13-mile (21-kilometer) race in just over 50 minutes. This time significantly beat the existing human world record, which stands at over 57 minutes.

The creators of Lightning expressed immense satisfaction with the robot’s performance. Du Xiaodi, a development engineer at Honor, drew parallels between the progress in robotics and the evolution of other industries.

“Looking ahead, some of these technologies might be transferred to other areas,” Du stated. “It’s similar to how the automotive industry initially developed through competitions.”

The marathon served as a real-world test for the robots, evaluating their capabilities in balance, endurance, and navigation. Some robots ran autonomously, while others were remotely controlled, all ensuring a safe distance from human participants.

The competition was not without its challenges. Several robots experienced difficulties, with some stumbling or deviating from the course. Tragically, one robot sustained significant damage and had to be carried off after a fall.

Despite these setbacks, the overall progress in robotic performance was evident when compared to the previous year’s event, where most robots struggled to even complete the race.

Spectators expressed enthusiasm for the robotic achievements. Sun Zhigang shared his excitement, noting that it was the first time robots had outperformed humans in such a competition, a scenario he had never imagined.

“Their performance is quite impressive,” remarked Jiang Liangzhi. “I didn’t expect the speeds to be this fast already, and they’re all very stable.”

Organizers emphasized that the marathon’s primary objective is not solely focused on speed. Instead, it aims to push the boundaries of robotics technology beyond laboratory settings, exploring potential applications in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, and emergency response.

Chinese companies are actively pursuing the development of robot technologies for both civilian and military applications.
