Major Cruise Line Scraps Low Fares Due to Website Glitch

SouthernWorldwide.com – Carnival Cruise Line is facing consumer backlash and disbelief after canceling a significant number of cruise reservations. These bookings were made when a website glitch briefly displayed drastically reduced fares on several sailings.

The incident is understood to have occurred following a planned IT maintenance project. This maintenance reportedly disrupted parts of the cruise line’s booking system, leading to the pricing anomaly.

A passenger shared on Reddit’s r/CarnivalCruiseFans, “After the site maintenance on Saturday, I was able to book a solo balcony on a 6-day cruise for $300 yesterday. Hoping Carnival will honor the price because it was quite literally a steal.”

Typically, a five-to-seven-day cruise with Carnival costs between $600 to $1,500 per person. This price range varies depending on the chosen destination, according to reports.

Carnival subsequently canceled the affected bookings. The company reportedly notified customers via email, stating that the displayed prices were “far below any reasonable promotional fare.”

These cancellations have ignited a debate online. Some travelers are arguing that Carnival should honor the bookings despite the apparent pricing error.

One user on Reddit expressed, “Sometimes when a company makes a mistake, they should just take the loss.”

Another traveler mentioned that they had already booked flights after securing what they believed was a legitimate deal.

Conversely, others argue that the prices were simply too low to be genuine.

One user commented, “If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.”

Another added, “You took advantage of a ‘glitch.’ They don’t have to honor that.”

Some users also pointed out that pricing errors are not uncommon across the travel industry. These mistakes are often canceled once they are discovered.

Carnival’s ticket contract includes a clause. It states that if a cruise fare is listed or advertised incorrectly due to an electronic, typographical, human, or other error, the company reserves the right to ask the guest to pay the correct fare or cancel the cruise with a full refund.

Despite this clause, several travelers expressed that Carnival could have handled the situation differently. This is particularly true for customers who had already made additional travel plans in conjunction with their cruise booking.
