SouthernWorldwide.com – The Northlake Police Department has issued a public advisory regarding a new, unsophisticated yet effective scam targeting gas station customers.
This scheme, dubbed the “screw scam” by authorities, involves perpetrators inserting a small screw into the nozzle cradle of a gas pump. When a customer finishes pumping gas and returns the nozzle to its holder, the screw obstructs the lever, preventing it from fully engaging.
Consequently, the pump continues to register an ongoing transaction, leading the customer to believe their fueling has concluded. A waiting accomplice then approaches, connects their own vehicle, and siphons fuel, with the cost being charged to the previous customer’s payment card.
Police officials noted that these screws are typically visible when the nozzle is detached from its cradle. Therefore, they strongly advise all patrons to inspect the nozzle cradle for any obstructions before commencing their fueling process.

Additionally, customers are urged to remain at the pump until the display screen explicitly indicates that the transaction is finalized. This usually means waiting for the pump to prompt for a receipt or to reset to $0.00.
It is also recommended to listen for the distinct “click” sound confirming the nozzle has securely locked back into its cradle and has shut off. Printing your receipt serves as tangible proof of your final transaction amount.
Authorities also caution against accepting unsolicited assistance from strangers who may offer to hang the nozzle back onto the pump for you.
Should you discover a gas pump that appears to have been tampered with, the Northlake Police Department advises against touching it. Instead, immediately inform the station attendant so they can secure the pump and prevent further misuse.
In the event that you suspect you have fallen victim to this scam, you are encouraged to report the incident to the Northlake Police Department. Furthermore, contact your bank or credit card company promptly if you notice any unauthorized charges on your accounts.
