Obama Center’s Opening Ceremony Faces Criticism for Leftist Ritual Amid Star-Studded Event

SouthernWorldwide.com – The opening ceremony for the Obama Presidential Center has drawn widespread criticism and ridicule for commencing with a far-left “land acknowledgment ritual” prior to a star-studded event.

Valerie Jarrett, a former senior advisor to President Obama and the current CEO of the Obama Foundation, initiated the proceedings by stating, “We’d also like to take a moment to recognize the original inhabitants of the land upon which we are gathered today. We honor the Anishinaabe, the Council of Three Fires, the Ojibwe, the Odawa and the Potawatomi nations.”

These land acknowledgments are often viewed as performative gestures by the left, intended to commemorate Native Americans who historically occupied the land where an event takes place.

This practice has been criticized as “performative nonsense” on social media, as seen previously during events like the Oscars.

The underlying sentiment of these acknowledgments often stems from the belief that the United States was founded on “stolen land.”

However, online observers pointed out the apparent contradiction: Democrats hosting the Obama Presidential Center’s grand opening have no intention of relinquishing the land to the Indigenous nations they acknowledge.

Conservative commentator Steve Deace sarcastically questioned, “Wouldn’t they prefer you just give them their land back?”

Beth Anne Mumford of Americans for Prosperity commented on the hypocrisy, stating, “Land acknowledgements are funny because the real message is ‘I want to say I care, but I don’t really care or I wouldn’t have built this on land which I just said is yours.’”

Conservative commentator Stephen Miller echoed this sentiment, remarking, “So you just went ahead and built on that land anyway, huh.”

Siraj Hashmi, a senior strategist at Townhall, humorously referenced Chicago rapper Chief Keef, suggesting, “Pretty disrespectful for the Obama Presidential Center to not acknowledge the current tribe leader of the South Side of Chicago: Chief Keef.”

One anonymous user expressed bewilderment at the perceived illogic of constructing a “communist monument” on “stolen land” without any intention of returning it, calling the mental gymnastics “Olympics level.”

The opening weekend event on Thursday featured prominent Democratic figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The ceremony also included a concert with performances by acclaimed artists such as John Legend, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen.

Notable personalities like Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, and David Letterman were also in attendance.

The Obama Presidential Center, which has been a subject of controversy and cost nearly $1 billion to construct, is set to officially open its doors on Friday. The initial cost estimate for the project was significantly lower, around half of the final expenditure.

Adding to the controversies surrounding the center, one subcontractor has claimed that his firm is owed $4 million for work completed on the project.

The project was first announced in 2015, with Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side selected as the site in 2016. However, the groundbreaking was delayed until 2021 due to extensive bureaucratic processes.

Building on the site, which is a historic preservation area, required numerous local and federal approvals, multiple environmental reviews, and faced several lawsuits.

Following the commencement of construction, the project’s cost escalated significantly. The center was originally slated for an opening in March 2025, but this date was subsequently pushed back by another year.
