SouthernWorldwide.com – The Amalfi Coast, a renowned vacation destination, is grappling with severe overcrowding as a surge in tourists transforms its picturesque streets into a chaotic nightmare.
Visuals from May 1 vividly depicted the overwhelming throngs of people in Positano, a charming town perched on cliffs south of Naples. Walkways were so narrow and packed that movement became nearly impossible.
This situation has ignited a strong reaction from Italian social media users, with many expressing dismay at the current state of tourism in their beloved region.
One commenter lamented, “This is not tourism, it’s disgusting.” Another voiced a poignant question, “What have you become, my beloved Positano?”
A tourist shared their frustration, stating, “You can’t have these tour groups of 40 people taking up so much space all at once, and let all these people come in and get stuck like this.” They added, “Glad we left early today. What a mess! And such a sad story for Positano, and this whole region.”
Salvatore Gagliano, a former mayor and local hotel owner, described the scene as “straight out of the Third World.” He highlighted the inherent challenge of the narrow roads, noting, “When they are blocked, there is total confusion.”
Lee Abbamonte, a travel expert based in New York, observed that while the Amalfi Coast is not the only destination experiencing overcrowding, it feels particularly congested compared to others. He attributed this intensification to a significant increase in day-trippers from Rome and Naples, a phenomenon amplified by the coast’s rising profile on social media. “The secret is out,” Abbamonte remarked.
Abbamonte himself plans to visit Italy in June but intends to steer clear of the crowds by opting for the Aeolian Islands off Sicily, which he described as “similar in beauty, but way lesser known.”
Jordi Lippe-McGraw, another New York-based travel expert and influencer, noted that the Amalfi Coast is becoming “more challenging” for visitors. She observed, “Now, it’s noticeably more crowded. The difference is pretty significant, especially in peak summer. What used to feel lively now often feels congested and harder to enjoy.”
To navigate these challenges, Lippe-McGraw advises tourists to “go early or late in the day, book everything in advance and don’t try to do too much.” She also suggests, “If possible, stay in a quieter nearby town and use boats instead of driving. Adjust expectations.”
The current predicament is a result of “the collision of social media hype, cruise traffic, and post-pandemic demand, all in one of the most physically constrained destinations in Europe,” according to one observer.
Travelers hoping for a peaceful Italian getaway are instead encountering gridlocked traffic, lengthy ferry queues, and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.
Despite these issues, Castellanos maintains that the Amalfi Coast is “absolutely worth visiting.” He emphasized, “The key is planning to travel smarter.”

His recommendations include staying for several nights rather than attempting a rushed day trip. He also suggests choosing less-hyped small towns and avoiding the temptation to “conquer the entire coastline in one day.”
