Platner campaign accused of influencing potential replacement

SouthernWorldwide.com – The Maine Democratic Party has issued a strong warning to Graham Platner, the winner of the U.S. Senate primary, stating that he and his campaign have “no role” in selecting his potential replacement.

Platner has not yet officially withdrawn from the race and remains the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine. This comes despite significant pressure from both state and national Democrats for him to step aside following a report by Politico on Monday. In the report, a woman who previously dated Platner accused him of sexual assault.

Platner has denied these allegations but acknowledged he is considering “the best path forward,” understanding the political repercussions the accusations would likely create.

Devon Murphy-Anderson, the Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party, released a video statement on X. She emphasized that the party has been working diligently to establish a replacement process that is “open, inclusive, transparent, and fair.” This statement was made amidst a surge of newly surfaced allegations against Platner, with the deadline to finalize the candidate challenging incumbent Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, approaching in less than a week.

Murphy-Anderson further stated that thousands of Maine residents voted and volunteered for Platner, and their voices should be considered in this critical decision.

A statement attributed to Platner conveyed his sentiment that while he might not wish to be directly involved in the selection process, he believes that the voters and volunteers, rather than the “political establishment,” should be the ones to make this choice.

Maine Democratic Party leaders had previously called for Platner’s withdrawal on Monday. They cited “multiple women” who have leveled “serious, credible allegations” against him and affirmed that the party “stands with women and survivors.” The party clarified that no replacement process can commence until Platner suspends his campaign. They also stressed that there is “no legal possibility for a nominee to be selected by an individual campaign.”

The party expressed a desire for the replacement process to begin as soon as possible, allowing more time to conduct an “intentional and inclusive process for Mainers and Democrats.”

They further articulated their responsibility, stating, “We are entrusted with deciding who represents our values and who carries our banner. That responsibility requires judgment, leadership, and a willingness to act when circumstances demand it.”

The timeline for these decisions is particularly crucial. According to the Maine Democratic Party, the deadline for a nominee to withdraw, as set by the secretary of state, is July 13. Following this, the deadline for submitting a new nominee is July 27.

If Platner does not withdraw by the July 13 deadline, the Democrats will lose the option to name a replacement candidate.

Several prominent figures have been mentioned in media reports as potential replacements. These include former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and Nirav Shah, who previously served as the director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

This U.S. Senate race is considered a significant opportunity for Democrats to gain a seat, as they aim to unseat the five-term Republican incumbent, Susan Collins, and potentially regain control of the Senate.
