SouthernWorldwide.com – WWE star Sami Zayn is preparing for a significant triple threat match at Night of Champions, facing both Cody Rhodes and Gunther for the Undisputed WWE Championship. This upcoming event highlights a notable shift in how Zayn has been received by the audience throughout 2026.

The year began with a mixed reception for Zayn, but as it progressed, the murmurs of discontent have grown into more pronounced boos. Concurrently, Zayn’s own vocalizations about feeling disrespected and overlooked for opportunities have intensified, reaching a critical point.

Zayn’s recent character evolution has drawn commentary from fans and observers. He offered his perspective, describing it as a dynamic and adaptable approach. “Well, it’s kind of interesting because it might mean something different to different people,” Zayn explained. “There’s so much to say about this. I don’t even know where to start. It’s basically something where it’s up to you. It’s a bit of a choose your own adventure.”

He elaborated on how different fan groups might interpret his current persona. For long-time supporters who have consistently backed him and desired to see him achieve major victories, their connection might remain strong. These “ride or die fans,” as he termed them, may still be firmly in his corner, feeling that not much has changed for them. Conversely, other fans might have grown weary or moved on, experiencing a different sentiment.

Zayn drew parallels to his past encounters, particularly his matches with Trick Williams. “And you know, when I was working with Trick Williams and wrestling Trick Williams, it became very evident that here’s this new thing that’s very exciting and it’s like, ‘We’ve seen this. We’ve seen you. And it’s like you’re this comfortable pair of jeans and we get it but we want this now.’” He sees this observation as a key element to incorporate into his character.

By acknowledging and subtly playing with these audience perceptions, Zayn aims to turn them to his advantage. “And so then to kind of take that and go, ‘Ah, noted,’ and play with that a little bit and turn it to your advantage, it’s going to mean something different to those fans,” he stated. “So, that’s kind of the goal with this character at the moment. You can have it one way or you can have it another way. It’s kind of up to you. And the behavior will mean something different to one group of fans versus another.”

In developing this approach, Zayn looked to the experiences of established WWE figures like John Cena and Roman Reigns. He noted that these performers didn’t necessarily alter their core personas but rather adapted to the direction the crowd was taking them.

“And the reason why I think this is a little different and I don’t want to get into the whole psychology of it all or get into big character breakdown but when I’m envisioning things about this, I look at guys who really split the crowd in the past like Cena for years, or Roman Reigns when he was like ‘The Big Dog’ and he was clearly the No. 1 good guy but a lot of fans were booing him and all this kind of stuff,” Zayn shared. “Those guys, the one thing I noticed about them is their behavior didn’t really change whether they liked them or they didn’t.”

He found their consistency compelling. “They were just themselves. And the idea of being like my behavior changes depending on whether you like me or you don’t like me, which I think could be really interesting. And part of what excites me about that is it really kinda goes from crowd to crowd.”

This geographical variation in crowd reaction adds another layer of intrigue for Zayn. “So, when I go to Saudi, I don’t know if I’m going to be treated the same way by Boston and I don’t know if it’s going to be same as when I go to New York. And I don’t know if it’s the same when I go to Montreal or Toronto or London or Paris. So, that, to me, is very exciting.”

Zayn’s journey has seen him transition from a top babyface to a pivotal figure within The Bloodline, first as the “Honorary Uce” and later as a betrayer of Roman Reigns, Jey, and Jimmy Uso. This arc has significantly contributed to his current character exploration.

Reflecting on his motivations and goals, Zayn suggested a flexible strategy. “Yeah, it depends. I guess it depends on what your goals are,” he responded. “I don’t know maybe I’m old school in this way even though I’m playing with a new school idea here but I’m a little old school in that if I want to be cheered then I’m working toward getting cheered. If I want to be booed, then I’m working toward getting booed.”

However, his current approach is more experimental. “But now I’m playing with this kind of avant garde sort of new thing where it’s a bit more like, let’s see what happens here. Let’s see what happens there and maybe I will take those cheers thank you very much and maybe I will nudge some boos if the situation calls for it.”

This nuanced strategy is a departure from his past methods. “So, it’s a bit different. To me, it really depends on what the goal is. If this was two or three years ago and I’m going and I’m trying my best to get people to get on board with me for the sake of the story, the character, whatever and they’re outright rejecting me, I don’t think that would feel great. It feels better when you’re the manipulator because that’s what we are in a way. If I take them where I want to be taking them, then it feels great.”

The Night of Champions event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN.
