SouthernWorldwide.com – The NBA Finals made a historic return to Madison Square Garden for the first time since 1999, accompanied by an unprecedented security operation due to the attendance of President Donald Trump.
President Trump’s presence marked a significant moment, as he became the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game. This led to stringent security protocols for everyone entering “The Garden,” with media and fans alike advised to arrive well in advance of the Game 3 matchup between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
For members of the media, who were permitted to bring work-related bags and equipment, the security checks conducted by the Secret Service and TSA were particularly thorough. Following these checks, attendees proceeded through standard metal detectors.
Fans were informed that gates would open two hours before the scheduled 8:30 p.m. ET tip-off. However, it was anticipated that longer wait times would be a reality, as security and law enforcement personnel meticulously carried out their duties to ensure the highest level of safety.
The heightened security measures were evident throughout the area surrounding the arena, a sight that surprised early morning commuters. A security fence was erected around Madison Square Garden, and the NYPD announced road closures for both vehicles and pedestrians. These closures extended from West 30th Street to West 35th Street, between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue, commencing at 4 p.m.
Furthermore, watch parties planned in the vicinity were canceled. The NYPD cited security concerns related to President Trump’s visit as the reason for these cancellations.
“The NYPD, in coordination with the Secret Service, made the decision for Game 3, where we have a presidential visit, that we could not support watch parties right outside of the Garden,” stated Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a news conference. “We are looking forward to bringing back watch parties for Game 4. But I think New Yorkers are used to presidents coming to town, and they understand that that generally means lockdowns of areas, and that’s what you’re going to see tonight at the Garden.”
Madison Square Garden, however, offered a different perspective, suggesting that the permit denial for watch parties was due to local city officials rather than President Trump’s attendance.
President Trump has a history of attending major sporting events. Since the beginning of his second term, he has been seen at various high-profile contests, including the Super Bowl in New Orleans two seasons prior, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup.
Regardless of the official reasons, fans fortunate enough to attend Game 3 at MSG, with its reportedly astronomical ticket prices, were advised to brace themselves for extended queues and comprehensive security screenings. This preparation was necessary to witness the anticipated showdown between Jalen Brunson’s Knicks and Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs.
