SouthernWorldwide.com – The jubilant celebrations in New York City following the Knicks’ first NBA championship in over 50 years were marred by a shooting incident in Times Square early Sunday morning, which resulted in a teenager being hospitalized, according to the New York Police Department.
This unfortunate event occurred mere hours after thousands of Knicks fans had filled the streets across Manhattan to commemorate the franchise’s inaugural NBA title since 1973.
The Knicks clinched their historic victory by defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, which took place in Texas. This triumph marked their first championship since 1973, igniting widespread scenes of jubilation throughout the city.
Following the momentous win, videos circulating on social media captured some individuals engaging in destructive behavior.
One particular video appeared to show two individuals standing on the roof of an NYPD vehicle, subsequently smashing its windshield.
Another clip seemed to depict individuals climbing onto and entering school buses in the vicinity of Times Square.
A third video showed NYPD officers tackling and apprehending a Knicks fan as authorities worked to disperse the gathered crowds.
Although the championship-deciding game was held thousands of miles away, law enforcement maintained a significant presence around Madison Square Garden, the Knicks’ home arena.
Prior to the game, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had implored fans to celebrate responsibly should the Knicks secure the franchise’s first NBA title in more than half a century.
“As we celebrate, be responsible, look out for one another, stay safe, be smart, and make this a night that reflects the very best of our city,” Mamdani had stated on social media. “Let’s go Knicks.”
Despite these earnest calls for restraint, some of the post-game festivities devolved into disorder after the final buzzer.
Officers clad in riot gear, along with those on horseback, were observed managing the large throngs of people who had surged into the streets following the Knicks’ victory.
Additional videos shared online appeared to document instances of police making arrests amidst the ongoing celebrations.
“We will provide the total numbers later in the day,” a spokesperson for the NYPD stated.
Emergency officials had previously cautioned residents and visitors to anticipate road closures and traffic disruptions in the areas surrounding Madison Square Garden.
Authorities also reiterated their plea for anyone celebrating to adhere to instructions provided by the NYPD.
