SouthernWorldwide.com – President Donald Trump recently shared striking images of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool’s renovation, highlighting that the project is progressing ahead of schedule.

The photographs captured the pool’s basin, with the iconic Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument visible at either end. The water’s surface beautifully reflected the clear blue sky and scattered white clouds.

In a post on Truth Social on Saturday afternoon, Trump expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Looking really good! Should be completed before the Fourth of July, our target date.”

Trump further elaborated that the administration had “substantially upgraded construction materials, including surface qualities, sandblasting granite, and exterior stone and walkways.”

He emphasized that the project was made “a much larger job than originally contemplated for purposes of Beauty, and a much longer life.” He also noted the use of a “higher quality sealer with more reflectivity,” encouraging people to “Check it out before the Opening β€” It’s a very exciting project!”

However, the renovation has not been without its critics. Concerns have been raised regarding the resurfacing of the pool with “industrial-grade” material in a color described as “American flag blue.”

The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF), a nonprofit organization, even filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS) to halt the project.

In their complaint, obtained by Politico, the TCLF argued that “The vivid blue coating will fundamentally alter the visual and experiential character of the pool and the broader Lincoln Memorial Grounds landscape.”

They further stated that “The new coloration will cause the pool to resemble a large swimming pool rather than the reflective civic landscape it was designed to be, distorting the experience of the site for the millions of visitors who come to it each year.”

The foundation also pointed out that the Reflecting Pool is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

They believe that “reviews of work that would alter a key character-defining feature of this important national symbol should be subject to reviews under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.” Additionally, they contend that the project should have been reviewed by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, as similar work on the pool has been historically.

It is important to note that the TCLF is described as a national, D.C.-based education and advocacy organization, rather than a preservation organization.

In a separate Truth Social post earlier on Saturday, Trump had mentioned his decision to undertake a “much higher level of repair, using industrial strength materials, which will give a longer life, and a better look,” reiterating that the job was “ahead of schedule.”

The President’s consistent emphasis on the materials and completion date comes after a New York Times article published on Tuesday. The article alleged that staff at the U.S. Department of the Interior had raised concerns about issues such as bubbles, small holes, and inconsistent color on the partially refinished surface.

The outlet also claimed to possess documents indicating that, as of a specific Sunday, only 35% of the pool’s surface had been fully coated, and crucial joints had not yet been replaced. This suggested that the project might not meet the Independence Day deadline.

Katie Martin, a spokesperson for the Interior Department, informed The Times that different sections of the basin were at various stages of repair.

She assured that “The final product will be uniform, as the plan depicts.” Martin added, “As with any project, there will be revisions to the process to ensure the most efficient tools are used to get to the end goal.”
