SouthernWorldwide.com – A tragic three-vehicle collision in Ohio has resulted in the death of a promising young Division I college athlete at the tender age of 19.

Eva Moran, a talented pole vaulter for the University of Toledo, was the sole fatality in the incident that also involved two other individuals, both 19 and 23 years old.

The University of Toledo community is reportedly devastated by this profound loss. Athletic director Tom Moreland issued a statement expressing the deep sorrow felt over Eva’s passing. He described her as an exceptional student-athlete, highlighting her determination, strong character, and positive spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.

Moreland’s statement extended the university’s heartfelt thoughts and deepest condolences to Eva’s parents, Alena and Derrek, as well as her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton, and Kya. The university urged everyone to keep Eva’s family and her closest loved ones in their thoughts during this exceptionally challenging period.

Andrea Grove-McDonough, the director of cross country and track and field at Toledo, echoed these sentiments, stating that there are no adequate words to convey the team’s profound sadness. She characterized Eva as a remarkable young woman whose energy, drive, and kindness had an immediate and positive influence on their program.

Grove-McDonough further elaborated on Eva’s approach to her sport, noting her consistently positive attitude and genuine affection for her teammates. She was described as eager to learn, dedicated to improvement, and immensely proud to represent the University of Toledo.

The university’s commitment to honoring Eva’s memory was emphasized, with a promise to continue recognizing the example she set for all members of the athletic community.

The fatal crash occurred on Friday afternoon along Route 309 in Claridon Township. According to authorities, Eva Moran was operating a 2012 Hyundai Elantra when the collision took place.

The incident began when Moran’s vehicle struck the left rear of a 2013 GMC Acadia, which was reportedly waiting to make a left turn into a driveway. Officials indicated that Moran failed to maintain a safe distance, leading to the impact with the Acadia.

Authorities further explained that a third vehicle, a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling westbound at the time. Following the initial collision between Moran’s Elantra and the Acadia, Moran’s vehicle veered left of the centerline into the westbound lane.

It was at this point that Moran’s vehicle was struck by the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The impact resulted in Eva Moran being ejected from her vehicle, tragically leading to her death.

Eva Moran had just concluded her freshman year at the University of Toledo, where she was pursuing a degree in health sciences. Her athletic achievements were already notable, even in high school.

During her senior year, she set a new Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference pole vault record, clearing a height of 12 feet and ½ inch.

More recently, in her freshman year at Toledo, Moran achieved a 10th-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships last month. Her performance at this event marked a personal best of 3.57 meters.

Prior to that, in February, she secured a third-place finish at the GVSU Big Meet with a vault of 3.43 meters. In April, she placed fourth at the 56th Annual GINA Relays, achieving a mark of 3.27 meters.
