Browns GM Explains Decision Change on Myles Garrett Trade: ‘Opportunity Was Too Great

SouthernWorldwide.com – The Cleveland Browns have made a significant move in the National Football League by trading Myles Garrett, their reigning Defensive Player of the Year, shortly after he set a new single-season sack record.

Garrett has been sent to the Los Angeles Rams as part of a substantial trade package. This acquisition further strengthens an already formidable Rams team, while the Browns now face the challenge of adapting to life without Garrett, a player who has been with them since 2016.

Interestingly, Garrett had previously requested a trade from the Browns last year. However, the team managed to sign him to a four-year contract extension worth $160 million, which was expected to keep him in Cleveland through the 2030 season, his 14th in the NFL.

The decision to trade Garrett was driven by an opportunity that General Manager Andrew Berry described as “too great” to refuse. The package from the Rams includes the return of 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, a first-round pick in 2027, a second-round pick in 2028, and a third-round pick in 2029.

“Myles Garrett is a foundational player, Hall of Fame-worthy, and a homegrown talent who’s been here for a decade, and our intent was to have him be a one-helmet player for his career. That was the truth,” Berry stated to reporters on Tuesday.

He continued, “But there are moments where opportunities come up that quite honestly are unexpected and they force you to stop and reevaluate and look at it and say, ‘Is this something that could be really beneficial to the team?’ And that was the case in this instance. The opportunity was too great.”

The past season saw Garrett earn his second Defensive Player of the Year award, recording an impressive 23 sacks. He has consistently delivered double-digit sacks for the last eight seasons, with at least 14.0 sacks in five consecutive seasons.

Meanwhile, the Rams appear to be making a strong push. They recently extended quarterback Matthew Stafford for another season and had previously selected Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the draft.

The Browns, who used two first-round picks in the April NFL Draft to select tackle Spencer Fano and wide receiver K.C. Concepcion, now find themselves with two first-round picks for the upcoming year as well.

Jared Verse has earned Pro Bowl selections in both of his NFL seasons, registering 12.0 sacks and 22 tackles for loss as an outside linebacker.
