SouthernWorldwide.com – Ryan Fitzpatrick, a record-holder in the NFL, recently reflected on his unconventional career as a journeyman quarterback and expressed that he wouldn’t alter a single moment of it.
Fitzpatrick, who holds the NFL record for starting with nine different teams, shared his perspective on his nomadic journey through the league. He explained that his primary motivation was always to play the game he loved.
“I always wanted to play,” Fitzpatrick stated. “So wherever I went, it was usually with the intention of becoming a starter and playing somewhere.”
He elaborated that when circumstances led to a change, such as a new draft pick or a shift in team dynamics, he would move on. This was driven by his desire to remain on the field rather than on the sidelines.
“Then inevitably somebody would get drafted, and I would move on and go play somewhere else because I was a guy that enjoyed being out there on the field and not sitting on the bench watching,” he explained. “So that was just the way I was going to be able to do that, was to keep moving from team to team.”
His career path was undeniably unorthodox, solidifying his status as the quintessential “journeyman.” Fitzpatrick suited up for a remarkable nine NFL organizations: the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams, Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, and Washington Commanders.
Despite the frequent moves and adjustments, Fitzpatrick emphasized his deep satisfaction with his career trajectory. “But ‘I wouldn’t change it for the world’,” he declared.
He attributed much of this sentiment to the vast network of teammates he accumulated and the enriching life experiences his family shared. The journey extended beyond the gridiron, fostering meaningful connections with people in every city they lived.
“A lot of it was the amount of teammates I was able to have, but it was also the journey that I was able to go on with my wife and with my kids, and all the cool people that we met outside of football,” Fitzpatrick said.
These relationships, forged through his extensive travels, have proven invaluable. They continue to support him off the field, as evidenced by his participation in events like the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe.
“Our neighbors and friends, there are relationships in every city that we’ll keep forever. So, yeah, I think when people get drafted, they all have the notion that they’re going to be with the same team for their whole career. That just didn’t happen to be my story. I wouldn’t change it for anything because I absolutely loved every second of it.”
Fitzpatrick has been preparing for the celebrity golf tournament, even teaming up with Performance Golf to refine his game and lower his handicap, aiming for a strong performance on the leaderboard.
“The American Century is so much fun. It’s a great group of guys and girls that are out there playing, and it really just feels like family because everybody comes in every year,” Fitzpatrick remarked.
He highlighted the unique camaraderie and fan interaction that make the event special. It’s a different kind of tournament, where the focus is not solely on professional-level golf, but also on the shared experience and engagement with the audience.
“You get to spend the time together, and that’s how it is with the golf course. It’s just a little bit different of a golf tournament, A, because we’re not all great golfers, but B, because of the interactions that we get to have with the fans throughout the tournament. That’s probably my favorite part.”
