SouthernWorldwide.com – Federal authorities have issued subpoenas to prominent left-wing figures Hasan Piker and Medea Benjamin as part of an investigation into whether their recent trips to Cuba may have violated U.S. sanctions laws.
Piker, a popular Twitch streamer, and Benjamin, a well-known activist, are among individuals who traveled to Cuba in March and are now under scrutiny. The inquiry centers on whether their activities, including the financing, coordination, or delivery of goods to Cuba, potentially breached U.S. sanctions. This also includes investigating any possible contact with Cuban government personnel or entities.
The subpoenas, officially termed “Requests for Information” (RFIs), were issued by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). These requests aim to gather financial, logistical, and communication data related to the trips. Both Piker and Benjamin had openly discussed their participation in the “Nuestra América Convoy,” or “Our America Convoy,” which comprised delegations of communist sympathizers, activists, and influencers from around the globe.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that the convoy brought supplies to Cuba’s ruling Communist Party. This investigation is part of a broader effort by the Treasury, State, and Justice departments to counter foreign influence operations within the United States. Such operations are often linked to support for political violence, extremist movements, or acts classified as terrorism by the U.S. government.
Federal authorities and lawmakers have expressed increasing concern that foreign actors and affiliated organizations may be attempting to manipulate American political discourse. They are also worried about efforts to mobilize activists, sow division, and normalize rhetoric that could incite violence or jeopardize U.S. national security interests.
In mid-March, organizations such as the Venceremos Brigade and People’s Forum, described as a hub for communist causes in New York City, were instrumental in leading the Nuestra América Convoy. This convoy reportedly included approximately 650 delegates from 33 countries and 120 organizations.
Among the participating organizations was the Democratic Socialists of America, a U.S. nonprofit that lists Piker as a prominent member. The OFAC’s investigation is part of a wider sweep that involves as many as 40 American citizens who joined foreign nationals. This group includes controversial Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, who is associated with a global network of anti-U.S. Marxists, communists, and socialists. Further subpoenas are anticipated.
These administrative subpoenas represent a significant escalation by the Trump administration against a network of far-left nonprofit activists. This network has a history of defending communist regimes, from Cuba to China, while framing its work as humanitarian aid, anti-war organizing, and expressions of “solidarity” with those allegedly oppressed by “imperialist” U.S. “colonial power.”
U.S. law imposes stringent restrictions on financial transactions involving Cuba, primarily through the “Cuban Asset Control Regulations.” These regulations are administered by the OFAC. Generally, these rules prohibit unlicensed travel-related transactions and the export of goods or services to Cuba, with limited exceptions for activities such as journalism, humanitarian projects, educational programs, and specific initiatives aimed at supporting the Cuban people.
Hasan Piker is recognized as one of the most influential political streamers on Twitch. He has cultivated a substantial online following through a combination of Marxist political commentary, anti-American statements, and provocative remarks that have frequently drawn public criticism.
On March 10, Piker shared a photo on Instagram with the caption, “I’M GOING TO CUBA.” During the trip, a photo emerged of Benjamin’s wife, Maya Evans, smiling in Havana. She was seen wearing a red-and-white Palestinian scarf, a keffiyeh, around her neck, standing next to Piker, who appeared to be looking seriously at the camera.
In a recent livestream, Piker commented on the Justice Department’s indictment of Cuban leader Raúl Castro. He dismissed it as a “sham” with “no legal standing,” suggesting it was a pretext for increased U.S. pressure on the island. Piker characterized Trump’s actions as those of a “playground bully.”
Medea Benjamin has established herself as an activist known for staging media events at Congressional hearings, defense industry conferences, and the residences of government officials. She has been described as shouting invectives and slogans, branding herself as “anti-war.” Her messaging pattern, however, has been noted for denouncing the U.S. and promoting communist and authoritarian regimes, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Chinese Communist Party, and the Communist Party of Cuba.
Piker has faced criticism for past remarks, including stating that “America deserved 9/11,” a comment he later described as poorly phrased. He also drew criticism for comments made about former Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Navy SEAL veteran who lost an eye in Afghanistan. More recently, critics, including Rep. Ritchie Torres, have accused Piker of amplifying anti-Semitic rhetoric following the October 7th events. Piker has denied these accusations, asserting that his criticisms are directed at Israel, not Jewish people.
Sources also indicate that OFAC is investigating Olivia DiNucci, the DC Coordinator for Code Pink. DiNucci, a former Division I basketball player from Emerson College, is known for her seemingly approachable demeanor, which reportedly allows her access to exclusive spaces that she then disrupts with vocal activism. She was part of a convoy led by the Brazilian activist Thiago Avila.
Federal investigators are examining whether the caravan’s financing, logistics, coordination, or the delivery of goods crossed legal boundaries under U.S. sanctions law, according to sources. OFAC has the authority to impose civil penalties under a “strict liability” standard. This means the government does not need to prove intent to violate the law. In contrast, the Justice Department typically must demonstrate that a defendant willfully violated the law in criminal cases, often through evidence of concealment, evasion, or knowing participation in prohibited transactions.

In a lengthy livestream on Saturday, Piker engaged in a discussion with another influencer, Ashley St. Clair, about having a child with billionaire Elon Musk. He also criticized Trump and defended the communist leaders of Cuba. Piker also spoke at length about other news topics, including a shooting outside the White House, expressing alarm about the perceived chaos in America, stating, “It’s f@*&ing terrifying.”
