SouthernWorldwide.com – AI-generated actor Tilly Norwood is slated to star in her first feature film, titled “Misaligned,” produced by the same studio that developed the digital performer.
Particle6, a U.K.-based company identifying as an “AI-first and AI-hybrid” film and TV developer, announced on Monday that pre-production for “Misaligned” has commenced. Norwood, who is not a sentient being, will assume a leading role in the project.
Eline van der Velden, founder of Particle6 and a former actor herself, introduced Norwood to the public in 2025. Her team at the studio developed approximately 2,000 iterations of the AI tool, gradually training it to act.
The studio describes “Misaligned” as a “coming-of-age story infused with existential AI chaos.” The film is set in a surreal digital world situated “somewhere up in the Cloud.”
The plot is notably self-referential, with Norwood portraying an AI character that lacks personal lived experiences but has access to the childhoods and backstories of human individuals.
Van der Velden stated that the studio’s objective is to showcase the capabilities of AI to both the film industry and the general public. The production will involve traditional film professionals, including directors, writers, and editors, alongside AI specialists, according to Particle6.
“The film will absolutely be funny, chaotic and self-aware — very Tilly,” van der Velden commented in a statement. “But underneath it, there’s something deeper about identity, performance and our very human fears around AI. And yes, art will most definitely be imitating life.”
She further emphasized her desire to demonstrate that “AI can support premium narrative filmmaking, but only with substantial amounts of human craft, skill, judgment and time. That’s not a limitation of the technology. That’s the point.”
Norwood’s initial introduction generated significant backlash within the industry. Many film professionals voiced concerns that acting roles should be exclusively for human performers, not synthetic ones.
In September, the entertainment industry union SAG-AFTRA issued a statement clarifying that it does not recognize Norwood as an actor. The union asserted that “creativity is, and should remain, human-centered.”
The implementation of safeguards concerning the film and television industry’s utilization of AI in production was a critical point of contention during the 2023 negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major film studios. These negotiations ultimately led to industry professionals undertaking a strike for the first time in 15 years.
The union’s primary aim was to secure assurances that studios would not substitute human creatives with AI. The subsequently established labor agreement imposes limitations on the use of this technology.
